Really. Piss a player off after a complete breakout year by basically saying we dont think you are that good, wow. You give Marschessault 5 year 5 mill extension but you want give possibly the next captain a 7 year 6.0-6.5 mill deal to lock him up???

If he gets another 35-40 goals next season that price tag goes to 9.0-10 mill per & I doubt he gives a home town discount for going through this grind process.

Why not just pay the guy, he's an amazing player & Vegas has cap space coming out their ying yang. Dont get it.

His totals from last year alone eclipsed his whole combined career to that point.. part of it was a shooting percentage spike.

This is a safe contract for Vegas. If they gave him a huge extension and his points per 60 fell more in line with his previous years, everyone would be calling to offload an albatross of a contract.

If he scores 40 again, then it costs more aav. It's also a more sure bet for Vegas at that point.

This is a player that is still RFA end of next year. Safe deal.

He shot at 27% and he's unlikely to repeat that. Half that is a sustainable number, which would be closer to 25 goals than 43

Don’t stress. Bettman will give you every teams first line player or top pairing d-man this year because you didn’t win the cup in your first year[/img]

Do you really think NHL Players are that fragile? Do you think your boss at work will walk up to you and say, well you did great on this one job, we are promoting you and giving you a huge raise! No, the world doesnt work that way. You have to show your boss that you do a great job consistently to get that promotion and raise. Same thing applies here. This is your typical bridge deal. Funny how it doesnt seem to piss off every other player that gets one but for Karlsson it will.....

I understand the fear of ticking the player off with a show me deal, but the NHL is a business and I am sure Karlsson and his agent understand he came out of nowhere with these numbers. He did get a solid payday, which was more than he probably thought he would ever make for one year prior to leaving Columbus. Karlsson is the teams top center on one of the best lines in hockey. He plays on the top power play unit and is the teams best penalty killer by the coaches own admission. He is a great two way player that just developed late and then found the right situation. Barring injury, he will have another solid season. This season, I think he will be prompted to shoot more and score around 30-35 goals, and 70 points again. I live in Vegas and attended a lot of games last year, so I got the chance to watch him in person. He is sneaky good at both ends. After next season, I think Vegas will extend his contract another 5 years or sign him to a 5 or 6 year deal at $5-7M per. Just my opinion.
